Decoder
Read the fine print before you defend the report
Paste a tagged link from Slack, an ad preview, a partner, or a QR that “definitely works.” This house splits destination, UTM keys, leftover query junk, and the likely GA4 channel group.
What a UTM decoder is for
Attribution arguments start with a URL nobody fully read. A UTM decoder — also called a campaign URL parser — is the grown-up version of squinting at a query string. You see whether the source is a platform name or a domain, whether the medium will map to Email or Unassigned, and whether someone stuffed a creative name into utm_campaign again.
This house reads the five classic parameters plus utm_id, utm_source_platform, utm_creative_format, and utm_marketing_tactic. Other query keys stay in a side bucket so discount codes, locale flags, and leftover click IDs do not pretend to be campaigns. Fragments after # stay visible because some teams hide tracking there and then wonder why GA4 looks bored.
When you should decode before you argue
A partner changed a parameter. A shortener hid the tags. An intern pasted a staging URL into a live ad. A “working” QR opens the homepage with no tags at all. Decode first. Then rebuild in the builder or score the mess with the validator. If the medium is Paid or the campaign has spaces, you already know why last Tuesday’s exploration looked haunted.
What “likely GA4 channel group” means
The hint is a reading of common default-channel rules: email toward Email, cpc toward Paid Search, paid_social toward Paid Social, social toward Organic Social, and so on. It is not a filing with Google. Confirm with a test click in your property. If the hint says Unassigned, change the medium before you spend the rest of the budget explaining the word Unassigned to a director.
For the vocabulary behind the keys, use the glossary. For how GA4 stores session versus first-user fields, read GA4 UTM tracking.
FAQ
UTM builder questions
What does a UTM decoder do?
A UTM decoder (or UTM parser) splits a tagged URL into the destination, standard UTM parameters, leftover query keys, and a likely GA4 channel group so you can see what a link will report as.
Why would I decode a campaign URL?
Someone pasted a link in Slack, a partner changed a parameter, or a shortener hid the tags. Decoding is how you check the story before you put it in a report.
